Configure page settings
The public help center has four page-level toggles that apply globally — breadcrumbs, search, dark mode, and the language selector. They live in one panel in the layout builder. Each is a single switch.
For what each toggle does and when to leave it on or off, see Page settings reference. This article is the click path.
1. Open the Knowledge settings
Go to Settings → Knowledge in the main navigation. The Knowledge settings page opens with tabs across the top: Design, Sections, Tags, Markets & Languages, Roles, Templates, SEO.
2. Open the Design tab
Click Design. The layout builder loads — the page composer canvas on the right, the block palette on the left.
3. Scroll to the Layout panel
Inside the Design tab, find the Layout section. It controls the page shell (full-width / left sidebar / centered) and houses the Page Settings panel.
4. Find Page Settings
Within the Layout section, locate Page Settings. You’ll see four toggles, each labelled:
- Breadcrumbs
- Search
- Dark Mode
- Language selector
5. Flip the toggle
Click any toggle to switch it. The change saves immediately.
6. Preview the public site
Click Preview at the top of the builder. The preview opens in a new tab showing exactly what customers will see.
If you switched off Search, the search bar in the header is gone. If you switched off Dark Mode, the theme toggle is gone. If you switched off Breadcrumbs, article pages no longer have the path strip.
7. Publish the change
Toggle changes are saved as part of the layout config and applied to the live public site within a few seconds. No separate “Publish” button — what you see in Preview is what customers see.
Verifying on a live URL
After saving:
- Open your live help center URL in an incognito window (so cached layout doesn’t fool you).
- Confirm the toggled feature behaves as expected.
If you don’t see the change, hard-refresh. Layout config is cached client-side for performance.
Common gotchas
- The Language selector toggle does nothing with one language. It only takes effect when you’ve enabled more than one language. Single-language help centers don’t get a switcher regardless.
- Search off doesn’t hide search blocks completely. A search block placed in the layout will render but the search itself returns no results. If you turn Search off long-term, remove the search blocks too for a cleaner look.
- Page Settings is global. There’s no per-page or per-category override. Breadcrumbs are either on for the whole site or off.
